The Gaiety Musical Theatre Festival has been cancelled for the second time just two weeks before the star-packed event was due to make its long-awaited debut.
Featuring some of the West End’s biggest stars including Marisha Wallace, Kerry Ellis, Cassidy Janson and Lee Mead, the UK’s first outdoor festival dedicated to musical theatre had been due to take place in the grounds of Ragley Hall in Alcester, Warwickshire on 30 April. The event was previously due to play the same venue in May 2022.
A notice posted on the Festival’s website read: “We are devastated to confirm that the inaugural Gaiety Musical Theatre Festival has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.
“Our team have exhausted all alternative avenues to try and ensure the festival can go ahead in some way but sadly we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel. Ticket holders will be contacted in the coming days and offered a full refund. All of us at Gaiety Festival are incredibly disappointed by the news but would like to thank everyone who has worked for months to make the event happen.”
As news of the event’s cancellation spread, stars including Mead, Wallace and Collabro took to Twitter to voice their disappointment.
Mead tweeted: “Very sad to hear that this event has been cancelled for a second year running. I was really looking forward to performing and seeing all of you that have booked.”
Wallace tweeted: ‘The Gaiety Festival has unfortunately been cancelled due to a waterlogged venue. I am sorry to any fans who bought tickets.”
In a message to fans, Collabro posted: “Hi everyone. You may have noticed that Gaiety Festival has been cancelled. As with the last time it was pulled, this had nothing to do with us and was a decision made by the organisers. We are sending all our love to our brilliant fans who had bought tickets. The boys x”
