ITV has announced two new episodes in its All Star Musicals series with the first scheduled to air during the Christmas season this year and the other sometime in 2022.
John Barrowman will once again take on hosting duties with Elaine Paige returning as head of the judging panel alongside Samantha Barks (Frozen, Pretty Woman The Musical) and Trevor Dion Nicholas (Hamilton, Aladdin) to mentor and pass judgement on six celebrities for each of the shows.
As in the previous shows, the contestants will be given a crash course in musical theatre performance with the help of experts before performing a famous genre song on the show in the hope of being crowned All Star Musicals Champion.
Announcing the two shows, Katie Rawcliffe, ITV’s head of entertainment commissioning, said “This Christmas we’re bringing people together through the gift of musical hits, laughter and entertainment – all from the comfort of their living rooms! With a varied array of famous faces taking to the stage, there’s something for everyone. You’re in for a real treat.”
Commissioned by Rawcliffe and entertainment commissioner Peter Tierney, the Multistory Media production shows will also feature a special group performance by Barrowman and the three judges. The executive producer for Multistory Media is Simone Haywood with Lewis Thurlow as series editor and Rory Dalziel as series producer.
Commenting on the shows, Barrowman said: “We’re back with not one, but two helpings of this feel-good and fabulous musical affair and I can’t wait to show audiences what we have in store this time around.”
Paige added: “I can’t wait to be reunited with my fellow panellists as we get treated to front row seats to a night of festive entertainment. Expect higher stakes as more celebrities take to the stage to battle it out for the title of All Star Musicals Champion. Not to mention, there’s a few surprise performances along the way.”
Barks said: “I’m thrilled to be back on the panel for two fun-filled nights of first-class entertainment that will have audiences up and out of their seats dancing the night away. There’s a stellar line up of new celebrity performers we can’t wait to reveal, so watch this space.”
Fellow judge Dion Nicholas commented: “Musical theatre is back with a boom, and so are we. We’re returning to the stage, with more celebrities, more musical numbers and more epic entertainment to celebrate the joy of musicals.”
First seen in 2017 when former Coronation Street regular Lucy Fallon took the crown, the series returned in 2019 when another Weatherfield star Daniel Brocklebank won the title. Chosen by combining the votes of the judges and the virtual audience, the most recent champion was TV judge and personality Robert Rinder who won hearts and votes with his performance of ‘Be Our Guest’ from Beauty and the Beast.
