Comedian Jason Manford will take on the central role of the musical-loving detective Frank Cioffi in a major new touring production of Kander and Ebb’s Tony Award-winning Curtains.
The production will launch at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre on 4 October 2019 at the start of a UK and Ireland tour which will end at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre on 4 April 2020.
One of the later musicals from the prolific partnership of composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago), the musical mystery boasts a book by Rupert Holmes (Drood), based on an original book and concept by Peter Stone (Charade).
Debuting on Broadway in 2007, the show featured a crowd-pleasing and Tony Award-winning performance from Frasier’s David Hyde Pierce as Cioffi, the detective on the trail of a killer who murdered the leading lady of a new Broadway-bound musical on stage on opening night.
Manford’s latest musical theatre role will follow star turns in UK touring productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Producers. Further casting will be announced at a later date.
Director Paul Foster (Kiss Me, Kate and Annie Get Your Gun for Sheffield Crucible) will head a creative team that includes: choreographer Alistair David (Ghost, West End and UK tour and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The Sound of Music for Regent’s Park Open Air), musical supervisor and arranger Sarah Travis (Curve associate artist on Sweeney Todd, Sister Act), set designer David Woodhead, costume designer Gabriella Slade, lighting designer Tim Mitchell, sound designer Tom Marshall and casting director Jim Arnold CDG.
Following the Bromley run, the tour will visit Manchester, Cardiff, Sheffield, Birmingham, Darlington, Dartford and Stoke-On-Trent. The 2020 leg of the tour will begin in Wimbledon, Sunderland, Liverpool, Northampton, Glasgow, Leicester and Wolverhampton.
