My Fair Lady at the Chatelet Theatre, Paris
Alex Jennings is reprising the Professor Higgins role that won him a 2003 Olivier Best Actor in a Musical Award in a revival of My Fair Lady at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris next month.
Jennings took over the Higgins part from Jonathan Pryce at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane in a show that hit the headlines on a regular basis because of the throat problems of leading lady Martine McCutcheon.
He played the role for ten months before handing it on to Anthony Andrews. The Cameron Mackintosh-Trevor Nunn production of the iconic Alan Jay Lerner-Frederick Loewe musical ran for almost two and a half years from 2001-3.
Jennings, who played Prince Charles in the film The Queen, was again Professor Higgins in the much-acclaimed 2010 Chatelet production which is now being revived in a 23-performance run from 5 December to 1 January 2014.
Also in the new edition is Nicholas Le Prevost who played Colonel Pickering in the same West End production (and was Olivier nominated for it) and again at the Chatelet three years ago.
The part of Eliza Doolittle is being shared by Katherine Manley and Christine Arand, who are both better known for their work in opera and operetta. The Paris production is again being directed by Robert Carsen.
Scheduled for an eight-performance-only run at the Chatelet in April is Sondheim’s Into the Woods with a longer run of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I to follow in June, all in English with French subtitles.
