The iconic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar lands at Milton Keynes Theatre this week. From the musical geniuses Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, this award-winning adaptation by Timothy Sheader combines contemporary dance with powerful voices to create an unforgettable show.

A large cast dominates the stage as we follow the epic story of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus and the events that led to his death; but don’t fear, watching this show won’t be like sitting through a religious studies class at school. Sheader’s adaptation is a modern retelling, from the modern costumes to the street dance-esque routines, there’s nothing stuffy about this show.

As the curtain rises, you know you’re about to watch something unique. The industrial bars that make up the staging remain throughout and house a few members of the live band. A huge wooden cross sits on the floor, just off centre stage, acting as a platform to elevate some of the performances; clever design features mean that as the lighting changes, crosses are revealed on different areas of the set. The simplicity of the staging allows the focus to remain on the music and dancing, which are the soul of the show.

The synchronicity of the ensemble is memorising to watch, as are the performances of the three leading characters, Jesus Christ (Ian McIntosh), Judas (Shem Omari James) and Mary (Hannah Richardson). It’s safe to say that they’re a talented bunch, who propel the show forward with strength and energy.

The costumes are kept simple like the staging, but the use of props helps to elevate the visual appeal; like the use of silver paint on Judas’ hands to show that he has made a deal with the Romans and the glitter that is thrown at Jesus when he’s being beaten. It’s hard to explain, but these details are incredibly effective.

Even if you’ve never seen Jesus Christ Superstar before, you will recognise a number of the tracks, including the iconic title song that becomes the heartbeat of the show. The band is brilliant at adding depth to the songs and so accurate with their playing that at times you forget that the musicians are playing live.

An interesting and intense experience, Jesus Christ Superstar is well worth a watch.
