Jodie Steele and Ross William Wild will return to the central roles of Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby for the festive run of Ruby in the Dust Theatre’s Gatsby: The Musical at the Southwark Playhouse.
Steele (SIX The Musical, Heathers) and Wild (Million Dollar Quartet, American Idiot) will be joined by Luke Bayer (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Apollo Theatre, Rent, Hope Mill Theatre) as Nick Carraway, Bradley Clarkson (Guys and Dolls, Gordon Craig Theatre, Dreamcoats & Petticoats, Playhouse Theatre) as Tom Buchanan, Robert Grose (Kinky Boots, Adelphi Theatre, Smokey Joe’s Café, Prince of Wales) as Woolfe, Julie Yammanee (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, UK tour, Lazarus – The David Bowie Project, King’s Cross Theatre) as Myrtle Wilson and Juan Lobo (In the Heights, Bridewell Theatre) as George Wilson.
The cast is completed by Freddie Love (A Little Night Music, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival) as Jordan Baker and Oliver Mawdsley (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Arts Theatre) as Owl Eyes with Tristan Pegg (The Merry Wives of Windsor, RSC) and Ash Weir taking on all the other roles.
Written and directed by Linnie Reedman with original jazz-infused music by Joe Evans, the musical inspired by F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic Jazz Age romantic tragedy, The Great Gatsby will follow its acclaimed digital concert performance at Cadogan Hall earlier this year by playing Southwark Playhouse from 8 December 2021 until 8 January 2022.
Commenting of the musical, Reedman said: “Gatsby has become, over the years, synonymous with glamour, glitz and parties. What a lot of people forget, however, is that the ‘Roaring Twenties’ came immediately after a World War. And a global pandemic. It was a period of upheaval and great change. I think the story of a crushed American dreamed, juxtaposed against individual hope and optimism is essentially pertinent today.”
Presented by Ruby in the Dust Theatre, the creative team includes musical director Victoria Calver, choreographer Chris Whittaker, associate choreographer Marcus J Foreman, lighting designer Dominic Warwick, designer Isabella Van Braeckel, costume designer Belle Mundi, company stage manager Ela Schmid, sound consultant Lugh Horner, sound operator Anja Urban, production photographer Lidia Crisafulli and production consultant Elliot Pritchard.
Gatsby has previously been seen at London venues Crazy Coqs, the King’s Head, Riverside Studios, the Leicester Square Theatre and The Other Palace and at the Theatre Royal Windsor. The concert performance at London’s Cadogan Hall starring Ross William Wild as Gatsby and Jodie Steele as Daisy Buchanan was streamed online in February this year.
