Stage, screen and recording artist Josh Groban will play the Demon Barber, Sweeney Todd opposite Tony Award-winner Annaleigh Ashford as the resourceful Mrs Lovett in the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s multi-award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd since 1980.
Produced by Jeffrey Seller and directed by Hamilton’s Tony Award-winning director Thomas Kail, the production is due to begin performances at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontaine Theatre on 26 February 2023 with an official opening night on 26 March 2023.
The production will offer Broadway audiences the chance to experience Sweeney Todd as it was performed in the original production over four decades ago, featuring Jonathan Tunick’s classic 26-player orchestration on an epic scale. Alex Lacamoire (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) will reunite with Kail as music supervisor. The new production will be choreographed by Steven Hoggett (Once, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) with set design set design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Nevin Steinberg. Casting is by The Telsey Office.
The original production of Sweeney Todd won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction for Hal Prince. The production starred Len Cariou as Todd and Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett.
Based on Christopher Bond’s 1973 play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the first West End production which opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the summer of 1980 starred Denis Quilley and Sheila Hancock. The production won the 1980 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
