Multi-award-winning Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall has used her lockdown time to write the music for a stage musical version of cult British film Saving Grace.
In an interview with the BBC, Tunstall revealed that the enforced time away from live performing had pushed her into “flexing her musical muscles” in a new way with the stage adaptation of fellow Scot Craig Ferguson and Mark Crowdy’s 2000 film.
The singer who first found fame in 2004 with her debut album Eye to the Telescope went on to say that musical had “always piqued her interest” and she was “just so pleased that it came together at the right time”, adding “we’ve done a really rip-roaring, very funny adaptation for the theatre. I’m really excited to finally turn this movie into a musical 20 years later”.
The Cornwall-set film comedy is about a middle-aged widow who comes up with an unusual and not exactly legal way to pay off her errant husband’s huge debts. The film which starred Brenda Blethyn in the title role and Ferguson as Grace’s gardener also famously inspired the much-loved TV series Doc Martin.
The musical version will be based on Ferguson and Crowdy’s original screenplay with music and lyrics by Tunstall and a book by April de Angelis. The production which will be directed by Laurence Connor (Cinderella, School of Rock) and produced by Barney Wragg is expected to debut in London later this year.
