Out of the Lens – Edinburgh Festival Fringe

_2014OUTOFTH_3HOut of the Lens continues at the Sweet Grassmarket until 24 August.

This is a find – catch it ASAP!

Edinburgh sees the birth of a new musical that is very much of our time. A two-hander, the plot is about a photography student who is ‘discovered’ in a tea room by another young man who oddly becomes his ‘muse’.  The script is light and pacey – both performers have natural rhythm and an easy rapport with the audience.

Guy Woolf plays Joseph (‘Joe’), the student photographer from a middle-class family that doesn’t hide their disappointment at his creative choice of career. He’s struggling to find his oeuvre until he meets Ryan (Andrew Walker) – a gay man who finds Joe terribly attractive.

The songs and underscoring in this piece are simply excellent. The title number is the best single song I have heard in any show this year.

As the plot develops, we are taught to look and then look again, as things are seldom as they first appear. This is classic Fringe – and the nugget of greatness that makes any Edinburgh Fringe worthwhile. Congratulations to David Kingsmill and Nicholas Chave – a delightful show, gents.
