Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda has teamed up with Dear Evan Hansen’s Ben Platt for a special musical mash-up released as part of Miranda’s popular Hamildrop series.
Arranged by Hamilton orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, ‘Found Tonight’ combines lyrics from ‘The Story of Tonight’ from Hamilton and ‘You Will Be Found’ from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s Dear Evan Hansen.
Part of the proceeds from the single will go to the March For Our Lives Initiative, the demonstration in Washington on 24 March planned as part of the campaign against gun violence set up following the mass school shooting in Florida last month.
Heavily tipped from its Broadway opening night as a potential awards winner, Hamilton banked the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album before adding a stunning 11 Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical to its trophy cabinet.
Still playing to sell-out crowds on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre since August last year, Miranda’s tale of one of America’s founding fathers debuted Off-Broadway in February 2015 where it secured the piece’s first gong, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
Based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, the show which has book, music and lyrics by Miranda, is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Lacamoire.
The London production of Miranda’s hip-hop flavoured show was one of 2017’s most eagerly-anticipated West End premieres ahead of its opening at Mackintosh’s refurbished Victoria Palace Theatre and has now picked up 13 Olivier Award nominations.
Pasek and Paul’s Dear Evan Hansen opened on Broadway in 2016, winning rave reviews and collecting six Tony Awards including the Best Actor award for Platt. Rumours of an imminent West End transfer have been circulating for months but specific dates and the venue have yet to be confirmed.
