Monster musical The Little Shop of Horrors will be the final production in Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s 2018 season.
Running from 3 August until 15 September, the new production of the musical which features music by Alan Menken and a book and lyrics by Howard Ashman will be directed by Maria Aberg (Fantastic Mr Fox, Nuffield/Lyric Hammersmith) in her Open Air Theatre debut.
Based on Roger Corman’s 1960 cult classic movie, the musical was first staged Off-Broadway in 1982 ahead of its West End debut in 1983.
The Regent’s Park production will be designed by Tom Scutt whose credits include the venue’s Jesus Christ Superstar with musical supervision by Tom Deering (Jesus Christ Superstar, On the Town), lighting design by Howard Hudson (On the Town), sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph and casting by Stuart Burt.
Also included in the 2018 season are a revival of the 2015 Olivier- nominated production of Peter Pan which will open the season. Directed by Open Air Theatre artistic director Timothy Sheader (Jesus Christ Superstar) and Liam Steep, the production will feature set design by The Grinning Man award-winner Jon Bausor.
The Turn of the Screw, a co-production with English National Opera will follow, running from 22 June until 30 June, with the Max Webster-directed version of As You Like It taking over from (6 July until 28 July).
Returning to the Open Air Theatre following his production of Twelfth Night in 2014, Webster’s re-imagined As You Like It will feature original music composed by former Noah and the Whale frontman Charlie Fink who previously worked with Webster on The Lorax.
Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has also announced its award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar will open at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, USA in April 2018. Timothy Sheader directs with design by Tom Scutt, choreography by Drew McOnie and lighting design by Lee Curran.
