Mamma Mia! The Party set to open in London

Screen Shot 2017-06-01 at 16.17.53Björn Ulvaeus and producer Ingrid Sutej are applying for planning permission to bring their successful project Mamma Mia! The Party to London.

The duo is hoping to build a temporary venue in Waterloo to house a typical Greek taverna which provides the setting for a show that features new characters, a new story, songs from the hit musical, plus extra Abba hits.

A sell-out success since it opened in Stockholm last January, Mamma Mia! The Party is the creation of Ulvaeus, director Roine Söderlundh and writer Calle Norlén.

Announcing his plans to bring the concept to the capital, Ulvaeus said: “The Southbank is the perfect place for Mamma Mia! The Party. The building could be used for other activities as well, outside party hours, so we hope it would be an asset for the whole community.”

The team has approached local social enterprise Coin Street Community Builders about temporary use of a currently undeveloped site adjacent to the Coin Street neighbourhood centre on Stamford Street in south east London.

Creating a Greek island paradise in the heart of London, the plan is to build a temporary taverna where the audience will be served Mediterranean food and entertained by a cast of actors and musicians.

Describing the project, the deputy group director of Coin Street Community Builders, Alison Pinner said: “Mamma Mia! The Party is an exciting temporary use for a currently undeveloped site of ours. The permanent use for the site will be Phase 2 of our neighbourhood centre. But until we’re ready to move forward with that, we believe this to be a creative and interesting use. We anticipate working with the creators to use the space for community activities at times when it is not open to the public.”
