Hot Wheels, a new, bold and empowering musical celebrating dashing roller derby culture, is being performed by British Youth Music Theatre at the Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax from 23-24 April 2022.
British Youth Music Theatre’s young, exceptionally talented and fearless cast is fully ready to storm the stage of the Square Chapel Arts Centre and immerse the public in the daredevil world of roller derby – all depicted in a piece of musical theatre boasting intricate musicality and dramatic choreography. Can you imagine such a mix?
Hot Wheels is conceived, written and directed by Ellie Jones, whose credits include Macbeth (Royal Shakespeare Company), Invincible (Orange Tree Richmond and St James Theatre) which was nominated for Best Ensemble and Best Director at the Off-West End Awards, Tanzi Libre (Southwark Playhouse), Romeo & Juliet, The Tempest and The Importance Of Being Earnest (New Wolsey, Ipswich) and many more.
Get ready for the grand slam and believe in the team. If you have a clear mind and a strong will, you can’t lose. On the track they are invincible, unstoppable and ferocious in their attack. This is roller derby, the perfect escape. But sometimes winning isn’t the most important thing. From an exceptional young company of emerging performing talent, comes an extraordinarily empowering new musical. Daring movement, spectacular harmonies and ensemble work – on rollerskates! Starlight express this is not.
Writer and director Jones says: “I wanted to create an empowering show for women and girls. I chose roller derby because it is a body-positive, kick-ass feminist sport that encourages women to take up space, be part of a supportive and inclusive sisterhood and be their own hero. This is a game full of strong, powerful athletes… that just happen to also enjoy wearing sassy outfits and creating bad-ass nicknames.”
The show is commissioned by British Youth Music Theatre, the UK’s leading musical theatre company for young people, and features a talented young cast, soaring harmonies, daring movement and evocative storytelling. The budding performers have mastered their roller derby skills with Roller Girl Gang and become a real invincible and unstoppable roller derby team.
Fifteen-year-old Hazel Read from Leeds can’t wait to be part of BYMT’s Hot Wheels
One of young performers, who will be starring in Hot Wheels, is 15-year-old Hazel Read from Leeds: “BYMT productions always seem so vibrant and engaging, I was really keen to take part. I am so excited to start work on our production of Hot Wheels. I can’t wait to learn new skills and be a part of this colourful, empowering show. I am looking forward to starting rehearsals, meeting everyone and working with like-minded people.
“The subject of this production, a girl’s roller derby team, is so appealing to me! We can show our adventurous side, celebrate ‘girl-power’ and highlight a sport that people may not have experienced.”
Hazel adds: “My future goal is to pursue a career in the performing arts industry as an opera singer. I adore performing and hope to be involved in many different projects and my voice and skills develop.”
Joining Ellie in the creative team are Lee Freeman (additional music), Ella Grace (music and lyrics), Alicia Frost (choreographer) and Lee Freeman (musical director).
BYMT works across the UK and Ireland with West End professionals to offer unique opportunities and high-quality training. Since 2003 the company has trained over 8,000 young people, with alumni including Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Lauren Samuels, Charlotte Ritchie, Jack Bence, Lucy Griffiths, Luke McCall and Bradley Jaden.
