Michael Ball will return to the West End next year in a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love re-imagined for the 21st century.
Reuniting Ball with his director on the 2012 West End revival of Sweeney Todd, Jonathan Kent, the new production will begin performances at the Lyric Theatre on 12 May 2023 with the initial booking period running through to 11 November 2023.
Expressing his delight at returning to one of the musicals that have defined his career, Ball said: “Aspects of Love holds a very special place in my heart. I am absolutely delighted to revisit Andrew Lloyd Webber’s glorious score in a re-imagined chamber production in the West End from May next year.
“I am so happy to be collaborating again with the brilliant director Jonathan Kent who was so inspiring when we worked together on Sweeney Todd.
“We are just at the start of our journey so the big question is will I be singing my favourite song ‘Love Changes Everything’ – what do you think? All will be revealed soon…”
Based on the 1955 novella by David Garnett with music by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart, Aspects of Love premiered at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1989. The musical follows the romantic fortunes of actress Rose, her admirer Alex, his young cousin Jenny, his uncle George and George’s long-term mistress Giulietta. The rumour is that Ball will play uncle George in the new production.
The original production was directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. Ball created the role of Alex on stage in the West End and also starred in the Broadway transfer production.
The revised version of the musical will be produced by Nica Burns, by arrangement with The Really Useful Company Limited
