The Olivier Award-winning Mischief Comedy, The Guilty Feminist Podcast and the world premiere of Philip Ridley’s lockdown monologues The Beast Will Rise are the latest additions to the packed line-up of shows in the programme for the newly-created New Normal Festival.
One of the first outdoor theatre seasons announced as the lockdown eases, the New Normal Festival will bring an eclectic mix of comedy, magic, music and theatre to the walled courtyard of the Grade II listed Royal Victoria Patriotic Building in London.
The brainchild of director Sean Turner, the festival began with a tweet just a few days ago inviting producers with outdoor-ready shows to get in touch.
Unveiling the first details of his festival, event curator Turner said: “I am absolutely over the moon to be able to offer an opportunity to all these incredible artists after such a tough few months. I’ve always wanted to use this gorgeous space for something like this so when Oliver Dowden said ‘Go for it’ to open air theatres, I leapt at the chance!”
Running through the month of August, a time when many of the performers would have expected to be in Edinburgh, the festival will open on 3 August with crime comedy CSI: Crime Scene Improvisation. Following all their lockdown efforts to keep home-bound audiences entertained, The Showstoppers will be back in front of a live audience with three shows over two days on 14 and 15 August while composer Alexander S. Bermange’s Edinburgh Fringe smash I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical will take to the stage on 27 August.
Other shows in the programme include Funny Gals, Natasha Barnes and Vikki Stone’s celebration of funny women in the movies; Dad’s Army Radio Show, a tribute to the classic BBC sitcom starring David Benson and Jack Lane; and The Three Inch Fools’ musical take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
With space limited due to the need to adhere to government guidelines for outside performances, tickets must be booked in advance with the box office closing two hours before the show.
