Baz Luhrmann’s vibrant Moulin Rouge is to follow his Strictly Ballroom in the journey from screen to stage.
Global Creatures, the co-producers of West Yorkshire Playhouse’s upcoming production of Strictly Ballroom The Musical, have turned their attention to the Australian director’s double Oscar-winning romantic drama.
Tony and Golden Globe-winning writer John Logan (Red, TV’s Penny Dreadful) has been drafted in to write the book with Evening Standard award winner Alex Timbers (Here Lies Love, Rocky) on board to direct the show which will bring Luhrmann’s vision of turn-of-the-century Paris to the theatre.
Luhrmann, whose highly stylized 2001 movie starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in a tale of love among the artists in the Montmartre quarter of France’s capital, has reportedly welcomed the choice of both writer and director for the stage reimaging.
Global Creatures has confirmed that the show will follow the lead of the film by focusing on the doomed love affair of the poet and the showgirl. Further details will be revealed at a later date and it is not yet clear whether the show will reflect the eclectic ‘jukebox-style’ musical content of the movie or feature new or original pieces.
