New productions of cabaret-musical A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad), the Nina Simone-inspired Black Is The Color Of My Voice, FRIEND (The One With Gunther) and Quentin Crisp:Naked Hope will be streamed worldwide next month.
Curated by Olivier Award-winning producer James Seabright, the four productions were filmed last month in front of a socially distanced audience at Wilton’s Music Hall – the oldest surviving Grand Music Hall in the world.
Announcing the four shows, Seabright said: “Thanks to a grant from the Cultural Recovery Fund we were able to give work to dozens of freelance actors, creatives and technicians, to record these wonderful productions and now present them to a global audience via stream.theatre.”
The winner of our first Best New Musical Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) will be streamed from 1-4 July 2021 and will then be available on demand from 5-11 July.
Written by double Olivier Award winner Jon Brittain with music by Matthew Floyd Jones, the cabaret-style musical that takes an inventively comic look at depression was created with and commissioned by award-winning Hull company Silent Uproar. Featuring Madeleine MacMahon, Sophie Clay and Ed Yelland, the piece has played sold-out seasons in London and Edinburgh and is set to make its debut Off-Broadway.
Presented by Seabright Productions and Martin Atkinson for Silent Uproar, the production is directed by Silent Uproar’s artistic director Alex Mitchell with movement direction by Jon Beney, sound design by Ed Clarke, lighting design by Adam Foley, set and costume design by Amy Jane Cook and costume supervision by Liz Dees.
A Seabright Productions and Play The Spotlight presentation, Fringe First award-winner Apphia Campbell’s Black Is The Color Of My Voice will be streamed from 8-11 July and will then be available on demand 12-18 July.
Written and performed by Campbell with direction by Arran Hawkins and Nate Jacobs, the solo show that takes its inspiration from the life of the American jazz singer and civil rights activist with the distinctive voice debuted in Shanghai in 2013 before arriving at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014. The show has also played sold-out dates at London’s Trafalgar Studios, Wilton’s Music Hall and at Crazy Coqs.
Streaming from 15-18 July before being made available on demand form 19-25 July, FRIEND (The One With Gunther) takes its audience on a trip though all 236 episodes of hit TV show Friends. Written and performed by the co-founder of the improvised theatre company The One Hour Plays, Brendan Murphy (Potted Potter, The Crown Dual), the show is directed by Hamish Macdougall.
Written and performed by Mark Farrelly (The Silence of Snow) and directed by Linda Marlowe, Quentin Crisp:Naked Hope focuses on two contrasting periods in the life of the writer and raconteur’s extraordinary life – the 1960s in Chelsea and 1990s in New York. Presented by Seabright Productions, the play will be streamed from 22-25 July and will then be available on demand from 26 July until 1 August.
