With the national tour postponed, the team behind our choice for the Best Musical at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Islander: A New Musical will release an original cast album later this month.
Available from 25 September 2020 through Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and all major online distributors, the recording will feature Olivier Award-winner Kirsty Findlay (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour) and Bethany Tennick (a Stage Debut Award-nominee for her performance in the show’s Southwark Playhouse run).
Featuring a contemporary Scottish folk-flavoured score by award-winning composer, writer and singer-songwriter Finn Anderson, the two-hander debuted with a sold-out run in 2019 at Summerhall as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The production played a successful three-week season at London’s Southwark Playhouse last October and the show was due to tour this autumn. The musical was directed by Amy Draper, with a book by Stewart Melton, and presented by Helen Milne Productions.
Commenting on the album, Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer Anderson said: “Creating the music for Islander was an exciting challenge. The score draws heavily on Scottish folk traditions, with raw a cappella vocals at its heart, but the use of the loop station allowed us to create a vast and fantastical theatrical soundscape with just two female voices.
“I’m always excited by how we marry tradition and innovation, and how centuries-old music and folk traditions can find new relevance through contemporary narratives and modern technology.”
Presented by Helen Milne Productions, the cast album has been co-produced by Anderson and engineer Dave MacFarlane. The album was mastered at London Mastering Studio.
