Star of Broadway and the West End Marisha Wallace has released her first original Christmas single, entitled ‘Little House in the Snow’. Written alongside Toby Gad who is also responsible for hits such as ‘All of Me’ by John Legend, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ by Fergie and Beyonce’s ‘If I Were a Boy’, this track is inspired by Wallace’s own experiences of Christmas where her mother kept the festive magic alive for Wallace and her siblings despite her father’s disapproval.
Recalling her memories of childhood Christmas, Wallace says: “I would watch Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Scrooge, The Muppet Christmas Carol and imagine that I would have those Christmases that you see on television and in the movies.
“Now, I try to make memories at Christmas that I couldn’t make when I was little. I will decorate and bring all that Christmas spirit that was kept from me for so long. Christmas to me means creating the life you want to have. Everybody’s Christmas is different, but if you have family and each other then you have everything, and Christmas is everything.”
Little House in the Snow is a beautifully gentle festive ballad, conjuring up cosy Christmas imagery. The refrain “Christmas always brings me home” resonates perfectly with what is surely, for many, the true joy of Christmas and the delight and comfort of spending time with loved ones. It’s not a dance floor-filler or a Mariah-esque pop classic, but what it possibly lacks in catchiness is more than made up for in the evocative power of the lyrics. A wonderful accompaniment to a relaxed and tranquil Christmas afternoon by the fire.
