Marianne Elliott’s critically acclaimed gender-swapped version of Company and the Tony Award-winning Come From Away lead the field in the nominations for the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard.
Illustrating the range and diversity of musical theatre currently playing in the West End, the hit revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Company and the more intimate new Canadian musical Come From Away top the list with a total of nine nominations.
Currently playing to packed houses at the Gielgud Theatre, Company is in the running for the Olivier Awards for: Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Set Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Theatre Choreographer. Performers Rosalie Craig, Patti LuPone, Jonathan Bailey and Richard Fleeshman are all nominated in the acting categories.
Inspired by the remarkable true story of the 7,000 stranded air passengers who found refuge in a small Canadian town in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terror attack, Come From Away – currently proving a hit with audiences at the Phoenix Theatre – has been nominated for: Best New Musical, Best Director, Outstanding Achievement in Music, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design. Ensemble cast members Rachel Tucker, Clive Carter and Robert Hands are among the nominates in the supporting categories.
Announced by Sheila Atim and Giles Terera, other musical theatre productions to feature among this year’s nominations include the London Palladium run of the Lincoln Center production of The King and I. The crowd-pleasing version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic garnered six nominations including Best Actress and Best Actor nominations for lead performers Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe.
Six, the musical about Henry VIII’s wives which began life at the Edinburgh Fringe and is now running at the Arts Theatre, received five nominations including one for all ‘The Queens’ in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical category.
As previously announced, choreographer Matthew Bourne will receive The Special Award during the ceremony on Sunday 7 April at the Royal Albert Hall which will be hosted by Jason Manford.
Commenting on the 2019 nominees, Julian Bird, chief executive of the Society of London Theatre and executive producer of the Olivier Awards said: “I This year’s nominations really highlight the sheer breadth and diversity of the modern British theatre landscape, with an exciting mix of well-established and new voices. We look forward to celebrating all this incredible creative talent on Sunday 7 April.”

The Nominees’ Celebration will take place on Friday (8 March) at The May Fair Hotel (part of Edwardian Hotels London, official hotel partner for the Olivier Awards), in association with Olivier Awards partner Cunard.
