Leicester Curve’s musical Christmas present this year will be a new production of Lerner and Loewe’s timeless My Fair Lady.
Following on from a series of acclaimed productions including Evita, A Chorus Line and the winner of the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production and UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production, Billy Elliot, Curve’s artistic director Nikolai Foster will direct the production which will run from 23 November 2024 until 4 January 2025.
Announcing the Made at Curve festive production, Foster and Curve’s chief executive Chris Stafford said: “Lerner and Loewe’s music and lyrics, matched with the words and imaginative brio of George Bernard Shaw, make My Fair Lady one of the finest musicals from the traditional canon.
“It’s a show we’ve wanted to present at Curve for many years and we are thrilled Christmas ’24 will be made magical by Shaw’s glittering crew of eccentric characters and some of the most wonderful songs ever written for a musical comedy. And at the centre of it all is Eliza Doolittle, surely one of the most inspiring characters ever to have leapt from the imagination of a writer.
“It’s the perfect Curve Christmas show and we look forward to audiences being enchanted and electrified by this timeless story.”
Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s glorious musical re-imagining of George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, was first seen on Broadway in 1956. The original production which starred Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and remains in the top 30 longest-running Broadway musicals of all time. Andrews and Harrison also starred in the musical’s West End premiere run at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1958.
The enduringly popular 1964 film adaptation starring Harrison reprising his Tony Award-winning performance as Henry Higgins opposite Audrey Hepburn’s Eliza Doolittle won eight Academy Awards including the Oscar for Best Picture.
