My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is Westway’s first cast album release

The original cast recording of award-winning show My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) will be first original cast release from new London-based musical theatre record label Westway.

Due for release on 21 October 2022 as the musical becomes the Turbine Theatre’s first West End transfer when it begins a limited season at the Garrick Theatre, the release of the Westway Original Imprint will follow the digital release of the single ‘We Will Be Loved Anyway’ on 7 October. The recording features guest singers Jessica Aubrey, Kayla Carter, Pippa Cleary, Oscar Conlon-Morrey, Isaac Hesketh, Jordan Lee Davies, Carl Man, Vinnie Monachello and B Terry.

Featuring bonus additional tracks and extra material, physical copies of the recording will be on sale at the Garrick Theatre.

Written and performed by Rob Madge (Les Misérables, 25th Anniversary Tour and O2 concert, Millennials, The Other Palace Studio) and directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet, Shaftesbury Theatre, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾: The Musical, West End, Menier Chocolate Factory and Leicester Curve), the production which debuted at the Turbine Theatre with a sold-out season in 2021 will follow its sell-out run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe by playing a limited season at the Garrick Theatre from 21 October until 6 November 2022.

The winner of the 2022 WhatsOnStage Best Off-West End Production Award, is described as a ‘celebration of the joy and chaos of raising a queer child’. The production features composition by Pippa Cleary, orchestration by Simon Nathan, mixing by Chris Fry, designs by Ryan Dawson Laight, projection design by George Reeve, video engineering by Neil McDowell Smith and associate sound designs by Anna Short.

Commenting on the album release, Madge said: “I am so thrilled that the music of My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is going to be released in the form of this album. As an avid collector of every West End musical cast recording growing up, the idea that our songs will now be released not only digitally but also physically makes me so very proud.

“As well as the music of My Son’s A Queer, I am delighted to say this album will feature exclusive bonus content, including extended monologues from the show and audio from a personal favourite of the home videos that appear. These songs hold a very special place in the hearts of Pippa and I and we have always dreamed of being able to share them – we never imagined we’d get to do it like this!

“I’m so proud to share with you all the extraordinary work of Pippa Cleary, Simon Nathan as well as the exceptional talent of our musicians, engineers, mixers and singers. I hope this album sings to that child within that fell in love with the art of theatre in the first place and reminds you of the magic that can happen ‘when the stage is your living room’. Anything is possible!”

Westway MD Neil O’Brien added: “I am incredibly excited that our first original cast release is a new piece of musical theatre and one that has already had great success at London’s Turbine Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe. With a West End transfer and exciting prospects for the future I wish Rob, Pippa, Simon and all the wonderful musicians and creatives involved in the project the very best – I hope it brings happiness to the world!!”

The Westway label was formed in 2020 with West End and Broadway stars Samantha Barks, Kerry Ellis and Ramin Karimloo among the label’s first signings.
