The full company has been confirmed as rehearsals begin for the festive return of the National Theatre’s new musical Hex.
Michael Elcock is returning as Bert, alongside newcomers Rosie Graham (Sanditon) as Princess Rose, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt (Cinderella, Gillian Lynne Theatre) as Queenie and Lisa Lambe (Improbable Frequency, Rough Magic Theatre Company) as Fairy.
The cast is completed by Zaynah Ahmed, Marc Akinfolarin, Christopher Akrill, Sabrina Aloueche, Sonya Cullingford, Ben Goffe, Chris Jenkins, Kalisha Johnson, Amanda Lindgren, Michael Matus, Kody Mortimer, Neïma Naouri, Mark Oxtoby, Aharon Rayner, Olivia Saunders, Sasha Shadid, Rumi Sutton and Riley Woodford.
Directed by the National’s artistic director and joint chief executive Rufus Norris who also provides the lyrics, Hex takes the traditional story of Sleeping Beauty beyond the Prince’s wake-up kiss. Told from the fairy’s perspective, the musical features a book by Tanya Ronder and music by Jim Fortune.
Adapted from Norris’s critically acclaimed 2002 Sleeping Beauty which took its inspiration from the 17th century folk tale, Hex reunites Norris with Katrina Lindsay, his set and costume designer on Sleeping Beauty.
Orchestrations for the production are by Simon Hale, music supervision is by Marc Tritschler, music direction is by Tarek Merchant, lighting design is by Paul Anderson, choreography is by Jade Hackett with consultant choreography by Bill Deamer, sound design by Simon Baker, and video design by Ash J Woodward. The associate director is Séimí Campbell.
Hex begins on 26 November 2022 ahead of a press night on 6 December. The final performance will be on 14 December.
