New Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to tour in 2024

Thom Southerland will direct a major new touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang next year.

Presented by David Ian for Crossroads Live, the new production of the family favourite will launch at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on 30 April 2024.

Southerland (Titanic, Parade) will head a creative team that also includes choreographer Karen Bruce (Strictly Come Dancing, The Bodyguard), set and costume design by Morgan Large (Newsies, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat), with orchestrations and musical supervision by George Dyer (The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Billy Elliot) and casting by Debbie O’Brien.

Following the Southampton run which will end on 12 May 2024, the tour will visit the New Victoria Theatre in Woking (15-19 May 2024), the New Wimbledon Theatre (21-26 May 2024), Edinburgh Playhouse (28 May-2 June), Theatre Royal in Newcastle (3-8 June 2024), His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen (11-15 June 2024), Churchill Theatre in Bromley (25-30 June), Milton Keynes Theatre (2-7 July 2024), Grand Opera House in Belfast (23 July-3 August 2024), Princess Theatre in Torquay (6-11 August 2024), Venue Cymru in Llandudno (13-18 August 2024), Kings Theatre, Glasgow (27 August-8 September 2024), Eden Court Theatre in Inverness (10-15 September 2024), Theatre Royal in Norwich (24-29 September 2024), New Theatre in Oxford (1-6 October 2024), Empire Theatre in Liverpool (8-20 October 2024), Regent Theatre in Stoke (22-27 October 2024), Leicester Curve Theatre (4-9 November 2024), Congress Theatre in Eastbourne (19-24 November 2024) and the Pavilion Theatre in Bournemouth (26 November-1 December 2024).

Based on Bond creator Ian Fleming’s much-loved children’s novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car, published in 1964 just a few months after the writer’s death, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was first brought to life on the big screen with Dick Van Dyke starring as Caractacus Potts.

Featuring music and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman, the film was adapted for the stage by Jeremy Sams. The musical debuted at the London Palladium in 2002 and features six additional Sherman Brothers songs not featured in the film.
