Performers and fans of new UK musicals will be able to purchase sheet music from their favourite shows with the launch of a new store of digital sheet music next week.
Launching on Monday (1 June), New UK Musicals is the brainchild of Darren Clark, the multi-award-winning composer and lyricist of new shows The Wicker Husband and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Designed and built during lockdown the site www.newukmusicals.co.uk will provide a connection between the creators of new musical theatre and the people who enjoy their music.
Announcing the project, Clark said: “Through conversations with my colleagues it became clear that there was something missing in UK musical theatre. There wasn’t a home where performers, students and fans could get sheet music from the new musical theatre work being written in the UK. So I decided to build one.”
The site will launch with a competition for performers who will be able to buy and download selected songs from the site and upload videos of themselves performing the song to New UK Musicals. The videos will be uploaded to the site’s Facebook page and the video with the most likes will be declared the winner. The closing date for submissions is 10 June 2020.
First prize will include a number of free downloads from the site along with the opportunity to perform alongside West End stars in a special edition of Adam Lenson’s SIGNAL online concert series on 16 June which will feature some of the new songs available on the site.
Commenting on the initiative, award-winning producer and director Lenson said: “Darren is an incredible advocate for other writers and for artist driven new musicals and it’s a great privilege to work with him to ensure more people can sing and get to hear these incredible songs.”
The writers with work featured on the site are: Finn Anderson (Islander), Rebecca Applin (Jabberwocky), Bateman and Conley (The Sorrows of Satan), Ed Bell (My 80 Year Old Boyfriend), Elliot Davis (Loserville), Gus Gowland (Pieces of String), Teresa Howard (I Capture the Castle), Richy Hughes (The Superhero), Carl Miller (Wasted), Noisemaker (My Left Right Foot), Eamonn O’Dwyer (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), Susannah Pearse (Jabberwocky), Victoria Saxton (Marriage a la Mode), Amir Shoenfeld (Benny in Beta), Emily Rose Simons (Confessions of a Rabbi’s Daughter), Tim Sutton (The Secret Garden), Stiles and Drewe (The Wind in the Willows), Webborn and Finn (The Clockmaker’s Daughter) and Wigmore and Green (Van Winkle).
