CR8TRACT Theatre’s new production of Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak’s Godspell will play 16 performances at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre in East London from 25 September until 10 October 2021.
Originally due to debut at the Walthamstow venue in May this year, the production is directed and choreographed by Brendan Matthew who also produces alongside Laurel Dougal and Laura Hyde for CR8TRACT Theatre and Jim Shields.
The cast includes Alex White as Jesus and Josh Hanley as John the Baptist/Judas, with Kimberley Ensor, Eleanor Walsh, Laura Hyde, Daniel Noah, Joe Churms, Reece McKenzie, Naomi Cowe and Martine J. Berg.
Musical direction for the production is by Benjamin Levy with associate direction and choreography by Ashen Gupta and Laura Hyde, lighting by Matthew Swithinbank, sound by Daniel Mawson and production management by Randy Smartnick.
One of the most distinctive musicals of the 1970s, and based on the parables of Jesus recounted in the Gospels of St Matthew and St Luke, Godspell boasts music and lyrics by award-winning composer Schwartz and a book by playwright and director Tebelak.
Tebelak directed both the musical’s Off-Broadway debut in 1971 and the first Broadway production in 1976. The rock musical received its London premiere at the Roundhouse Theatre with a cast that included Julie Covington, David Essex, Jeremy Irons and Marti Webb. The production transferred to the Wyndham’s Theatre in 1972.
