New production of Stiles and Drewe’s Just So to play The Barn in Cirencester

Stiles and Drewe’s musical re-working of Rudyard Kipling’s classic Just So Stories will be the final production in The Barn Theatre’s autumn/winter season.

Following on from the Cirencester venue’s hit launch production of the Tony Award-winning musical The Secret Garden, the family-orientated new production of Just So will feature a cast of actor/musicians directed by Kirk Jameson.

With music by George Stiles and book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe, Just So was originally produced by Cameron Mackintosh at Newbury’s Watermill Theatre in 1984. Mackintosh also produced the show’s London debut at the Tricycle Theatre in 1990.

Running from 5 December 2018 until 13 January 2019, The Barn’s festive version will be choreographed by Joanna Goodwin with Nick Barstow as musical supervisor. Orchestrations will be by Christopher Jahnke with associate orchestrator John Clancy.

The second season at the 200-seat venue which opened this year following three years of planning, rebuilding and technical development, will begin with Fringe At The Barn (12-15 September) featuring four of the most popular acts at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe (Tom Brace, Tom Neenan, Tamar Broadbent and Spontaneous Potter

Also fresh from the Fringe, the touring production of Stephen Macdonald’s Fringe First award winning play Not About Heroes will run from 27-29 September.

The season will also include The Barn’s own production of John Nicholson and Steven Canny’s adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes classic The Hound of the Baskervilles. Directed by Joseph O’Malley with set and costume design by Elin Steele, the production will run from 24 October until 24 November.

Announcing details of the new season, producer Jamie Chapman Dixon said: “We believe we have an incredible line up with something for everyone in our autumn/winter season. We are thrilled to bring Not About Heroes and the Fringe events to the theatre but also very excited to continue our in-house productions with The Hound of the Baskervilles and Just So.

“In our continued efforts to develop young creative talent, it is great to see that the directors of our shows have a history with the Barn. Joe O’Malley, as assistant director on One Minute. Kirk Jameson has gone on to great things in his career, but Kirk has previously directed for The Barn Theatre at a summer project in 2016.

“The development of young and emerging talent is a core fundamental belief of The Barn Theatre and we look forward to creating more opportunities for the theatre creators of the future. Watch this space.”

The ambitious project to create a major producing house at the heart of the development of Cirencester’s Grade II listed Ingleside House has attracted support from leading Broadway director Jerry Mitchell and actors James Dreyfus, Matthew Kelly, Heida Reed and Daisy May Cooper.
