The New York Musical Theatre Festival, affectionately known as NYMF (pronounced ‘nymph’ as in ‘nymph errant’) among New York theatre folks, has announced the 11 invited shows that will stage full productions during its tenth annual festival, running July 8-28.
The festival acts as a showcase for emerging creative talents in musical theatre, giving them an organised platform to display their wares. The 11 titles range from the mouthful Dizzy Miss Lizzie’s Roadside Revue Presents ‘The Brontes’ to much more succinct labels like Icarus and Feather.
Each show gets about five performances, and this year the festival should have some additional luster, using the handsome new Signature Theatre complex on Manhattan‘s West 42nd Street, with its three well-equipped theatres, as its major venue. In the past, performances often took place in some fairly scattered, well-worn spaces.
The New York Musical Theatre Festival also includes a group of shows it identifies as its ‘Next Link’ productions, which are developed with assistance from NYMF, as well as readings and various special events. It was also noted that Isaac Robert Hurwitz, its co-founder and executive director, is to step down after this year’s festival and that a search committee has been formed to look for the organisation’s “next generation of leadership”.
