Curve and Birmingham Hippodrome’s The Color Purple, Sheffield Theatres’ Standing At The Sky’s Edge and the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester’s West Side Story will battle it out for the title of Best Musical Production at the UK Theatre Awards next month.
The three hit shows were among the list of nominees for the 2019 awards which will be presented at a ceremony at London’s Guildhall on 27 October 2019. The recipient of this year’s Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre Award will be announced soon.
In the other major genre category, Audrey Brisson (Watermill Theatre’s Amélie The Musical), Jenna Russell (Menier Chocolate Factory’s The Bridges of Madison County) and Rebecca Trehearn (Nottingham Playhouse’s Sweet Charity) are the nominees in the Best Performance In A Musical category.
This year’s nominations are split into new On Stage and Off Stage categories as part of a refresh of the Awards to recognise the current priorities of the UK’s theatre industry. UK Theatre members now have more involvement in the nomination process and have been encouraged to suggest shows and individuals for nominations and can now submit applications for an Off Stage award.
