The Onion of Bigotry – A History of Hatred continues as part of the just Festival until 25 August.
The Kielty Brothers (Gerry and John) are legendary to Fringe aficionados. Commissioned by the just Festival, the piece is an exploration of one of Scotland’s ‘badges of shame’ – bigotry. But this is not a lecture of morality – this is a hugely enjoyable romp through Scottish history, mainly through song, to see where the onion acquired its layers and what may be at the heart of it all.
In the magnificent setting of St John’s Church in the West End, this entertaining hour will not just make you think – it will make you roar with laughter. John and Gerry are joined by Jordanna O’Neill and Stan Pattison in a friendly exploration of the layers that create this Onion of Bigotry.
A small but clearly appreciative audience listened to the history brought to life in a unique ‘Kielty style’. Tracing religious and royal influences on the population and alliances with France, Ireland and England, we get the sense of Scotland’s unique moral and ecumenical make-up. The Presbyterian number ‘Stop that!’ clearly realises a Scotland of grey where “It’s always winter, but never Christmas”.
There is a sing-a-long finale, urging us to put it all behind us, to ‘get over it’, and it’s fair to say that this is a self-deprecating conclusion to the exploration. Just like Peer Gynt, as you peel away the onion layers there is nothing at the core. An appropriate analogy to Scotland’s shame. And a great showcase for the Kielty brothers’ craft. Catch this one if you can – especially if you have no idea of sectarianism!
