A special 90-minute in-conversation with Dame Judi Dench and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth will be made available online from 3pm on 26 April 2020 to raise funds for the award-winning Orange Tree Theatre.
Filmed live at the popular Richmond venue, and packed full of stories tracing Dench’s glittering career, the video-on-demand film will cost £4.99, with all monies raised going to the Orange Tree Theatre’s Survival Fund set up to help the independent theatre reopen its doors once the current crisis is over.
Announcing the film’s release, OT artistic director Paul Miller said: “This film records one of my happiest days ever: the day Judi came to the Orange Tree. It’s 90 minutes of enormous fun and fascinating insights, in the company of a national treasure with few, if any, rivals for our collective affection. We hear about John Gielgud and Peggy Ashcroft; Clint Eastwood and Johnny Depp; about Ken Branagh, Peter Hall and how to speak Shakespeare.
“The crucial importance of company spirit runs through it all like a golden thread. And what company she is: this is a treat to savour in your home, while we wait to welcome you back to ours one day.”
Dench took to the Orange Tree stage for the first time in 2017 for the inaugural Under the Orange Tree series of talks featuring some of our most distinguished actors.
A celebration of British theatre, Under the Orange Tree, features guests including actors Derek Jacobi, Maggie Smith, David Suchet, June Whitfield and Penelope Wilton and critic Michael Billington in conversation in the venue’s unique round space with OT ambassador Brandreth.
As an independent producing theatre and registered charity, when the Orange Tree closed its doors along with theatres across the country on 16 March 2020, the venue lost 74% of its income.
