Peter Pan continues at Paradise in Augustines until 25 August.
This lively adaptation of JM Barrie’s classic tale is set in the ‘here and now’: the staff of Priceland are watching the clock for closing time and bidding farewell to Pete who’s off to find fame and fortune in London. Just as they are about to leave, they find a small girl abandoned in the store. Waiting on her being collected, the staff become the characters of Peter Pan – just to pass the time!
This talented cast sweeps not only the small girl, but the entire audience into the world of Lost Boys, Pirates, Indians and Captain Hook with sheer exuberance. Haley Cox’s adaptation and direction zips along and the 90-minute playing time seems quicker than many shows lasting only an hour.
Engaging performances from the ‘Principals’ are brilliantly supported by a well-drilled youth theatre and sprinkled with some catchy tunes, played by the actors on a range of instruments.
I do hope that this production may become available for other community groups to stage for themselves. A lively, fun and challenging piece for groups to get their teeth into. And, yes, we all clapped our hands as we believed in fairies and Tinker Bell was saved. Magical.
