Pretty Woman: The Musical joins the post-Tony Awards Broadway exodus, announcing it will close on 18 August 2019.
Adapted from the 1990 movie, Pretty Woman failed to impress the Tony nominators, who totally ignored the work, despite the story’s Julia Roberts-driven success on the silver screen.
The show was one of the first new musicals to debut last season, beginning previews on 20 July, for an opening on 16 August. At its final curtain, it will have racked up 421 regular performances plus its 27 previews. On tap are a national tour and productions in Germany and London.
The closing notice follows those posted by four others of the season’s crop of new musicals: The Prom and Be More Chill will both shutter on 11 August, while King Kong and The Cher Show – like Pretty Woman – both go dark on 18 August.
Also contributing to the current thinning out of Broadway musicals were two well-received revivals. Roundabout Theatre Company’s Kiss Me, Kate ended its limited engagement on 30 June, after 30 previews and 125 regular performances, while Lincoln Center’s My Fair Lady said farewell on 7 July, winding up an extended engagement of 39 previews and 509 performances.
