Understudy Rebecca McKinnis has stepped into the role of Margaret New in the hit West End transfer production of the critically acclaimed Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
McKinnis (Mamma Mia! We Will Rock You) has moved into the role she understudied following the departure of Josie Walker who played the pivotal role of Jamie’s loving mother since the show’s Sheffield workshop production four years ago.
Award-winning stage and screen actor Lee Ross (Birdsong, 36 Phone Calls) has also joined the show to take over from Phil Nichol as Hugo/Loco in the show which recently celebrated a successful live screening that hit the top spot at the UK cinema box office.
McKinnis and Ross are taking to the stage alongside continuing cast members: John McCrea (Jamie), Shobna Gulati (Ray), Tamsin Carroll (Miss Hedge), Lucie Shorthouse (Pritti Pasha), Alex Anstey (Laika Virgin), Luke Baker (Dean Paxton), Luke Bayer, Courtney Bowman (Fatimah), Marvyn Charles, Ken Christiansen (Jamie’s Dad), Jordan Cunningham (Sayid), Daniel Davids (Levi), James Gillan (Tray Sophisticay), Ryan Hughes (Mickey), Daniel Jacob (Sandra Bollock), Cherelle Jay, Harriet Payne (Bex), Chloe Pole, Shiv Rabheru (Cy), Lauran Rae (Becca) and Kirstie Skivington (Vicki).
Announcing the cast changes, the production’s producer Nica Burns said “It’s a big milestone saying goodbye to two of our terrific leading actors, Josie Walker and Phil Nichol. Josie has played Margaret New superbly from the very first workshop four years ago and Phil has brought his wonderful comic touch to the role of Hugo / Loco at the Apollo.
“I am delighted to reveal that Rebecca McKinnis – who has deputised brilliantly for Josie on a number of occasions – now makes Margaret New all her own. A big welcome to the talented Lee Ross who is putting on his heels to play the role of Hugo/Loco.”
Written by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie began its limited season at the Apollo Theatre in November last year following a successful debut run at Sheffield Crucible.
Directed by Jonathan Butterell, who also came up with the original idea for the show, the production’s creative team includes designer Anna Fleischle, choreographer Kate Prince, musical director Theo Jamieson, lighting designer Lucy Carter, sound designer Paul Groothuis and casting director Will Burton.
Originally planned as a limited season at the Apollo Theatre following on from a successful debut run at Sheffield Crucible, Everybody’s Talking about Jamie’s West End run is currently booking until 6 April 2019. The official West End cast recording was released digitally worldwide and on CD in the UK in April.
