Rita Hayworth musical to debut in London

The tragic story of legendary movie star Rita Hayworth provides the inspiration for a new musical which will receive its UK premiere at The Cockpit Theatre later this year.

Due to debut at the North London venue from 18 November until 23 December 2022, Love Goddess, the Rita Hayworth Musical is a full-scale show based on Almog Pail’s solo play Me, Myself and Rita and cabaret show Love Goddess.

Presented in collaboration with The Cockpit, and featuring five actor/singers led by Pail portraying over 40 characters, the musical has been co-written by Pail and Stephen Garvey with 12 original songs by composer-lyricist and musical director Logan Medland.

Produced by Laura Lundy and Blue Panther Productions, the production will be directed by Jay Stern and choreographed by Lorna Ventura.

Widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest beauties, Hayworth’s iconic screen performances in classics including Gilda, Cover Girl, You Were Never Lovelier and Pal Joey masked a troubled and turbulent personal life. Once described by Fred Astaire as his favourite dance partner, off-screen Hayworth was married five times, most famously to another Hollywood legend, actor and director Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan. Hayworth suffered from undiagnosed Alzheimer’s for two decades before finally being diagnosed at the age of 62. The actress died from complications associated with the condition just six years later.

Creator and star Pail wrote the original play after her grandfather, Meir Pa’il, recognised for his distinguished military career and later political career in the Israeli parliament, suffered from the disease for the final 12 years of his life
