The Royal Ballet’s newest principal dancer Matthew Ball will join New Adventures for the entire London season of Matthew Bourne’s new production of his innovative Swan Lake this Christmas.
After making his debut as Prince Siegfried in the Royal Ballet’s traditional Swan Lake, Ball will star in Bourne’s famously all-male version of the classic ballet, dancing four performances each week in the central role of The Swan.
Due to play Sadler’s Wells from 4 December until 27 January 2019, Bourne’s new version of his multi-award-winning creation will also feature New Adventures’ star Will Bozier (Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella) and former English National Ballet star Max Westwell (An American in Paris, West End) who will also be making their debuts in the role of The Swan.
Returning to the role of The Prince are much-loved New Adventures’ stars, award-winning Liam Mower (Billy Elliot, recently seen as The Angel in Cinderella) and Dominic North (star of a series of hit New Adventures’ offerings including The Car Man and Edward Scissorhands). They are joined in the role by another New Adventures newcomer, 19-year-old James Lovell, who will make his professional debut in the production.
New Adventures’ Swan Lake has been re-imagined for the 21st-century audience by director and choreographer Bourne working with regular associate artists: Lez Brotherston (set and costumes); Paule Constable (lighting).
Still widely known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, the convention-bending version of the classic ballet debuted at Sadler’s Wells in November 1995. A critical and crowd-pleasing hit, Bourne’s Swan Lake has collected over thirty international awards including an Olivier in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway.
