It was a very democratic night at the 79th Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with Schmigadoon! (Best Musical), Ragtime (Best Revival of a Musical) and The Lost Boys each winning four awards. Cats: The Jellicle Ball (Best Direction of a Musical) followed closely behind, having been recognised in three categories.
There was disappointment for Titaníque, The Rocky Horror Show and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). However, the latter – Kit Buchan and Jim Barne’s British musical, which transferred to the West End from the Kiln Theatre in 2024 – had already done extraordinarily well, receiving eight nominations.

The musical theatre performance awards went to Joshua Henry (Ragtime) and Ali Louis Bourzgui (The Lost Boys), along with two former Elphabas, Shoshana Bean (The Lost Boys) and Caissie Levy (Ragtime).
Levy had actually been attached to the Broadway production of The Lost Boys in its early stages but stepped aside due to family commitments, remaining with the revival of Ragtime. Bean subsequently took over the role, and the rest is history.
When it was announced that singer-songwriter P!NK would host the star-studded event, there was some surprise in theatre circles, as the American superstar had never appeared on Broadway.
However, if the fabulous ‘Lady Marmalade’ opening number – featuring a cast of 170 – and her performance of Chicago’s ‘All That Jazz’ are anything to go by, it may not be long before she appears on the Great White Way herself. Many commentators suggested that this year’s Tony Awards ceremony was one of the most entertaining in recent years.
The 2026 Tony Awards were presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
