Following an inaugural event that attracted over 10,000 musical theatre-lovers, the West End’s first official musical theatre fan convention Musical Con will return to ExCel London next year.
The event which turned ExCel London into a haven for genre fans for two sold out days in October will play an encore weekend in a larger space at the East London exhibition centre on 21 and 22 October 2023.
Musical theatre fans and enthusiasts enjoyed a packed programme at the inaugural weekend event which offered fans the opportunity to meet a host of West End stars, celebrate the shows they love, and even take part in an epic cosplay, lip-sync battles and singalongs.
Commenting on the first Musical Con, West End star Layton Williams said: “This convention is something really special. The energy in the room was just insane. The atmosphere was unreal. It was iconic!”
Fellow West End favourite Trevor Dion Nicholas added: “This was a historic event. There has never been anything like it. It was a truly magical weekend!”
Announcing the dates for the second Musical Con, co-producer Shanay Holmes commented: “This really is for the fans! It’s the convention our community deserves, and we are delighted to be returning in 2023!”
Produced by Chris Steward and Holmes for West End Musical Productions, highlights of this year’s Musical Con included: performances of ‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked’s four previous Elphabas; glimpses of new musical productions including SuperYou and the Hope Mill Theatre’s Cinderella; a spotlight on Cameron Mackintosh’s first 50 years of shows; interviews with cast and creatives of & Juliet and Back to the Future; and cast reunions of In The Heights and Rent.
The event also included special opening and closing ceremonies featuring Musical Con ambassadors Alice Fearn, Trevor Dion Nicholas, Aimie Atkinson, Ben Forster, Shanay Holmes and Layton Williams.
As with all genre fan conventions, the event included a marketplace packed with merchandise and memorabilia, with exhibitors drawn from across the musical theatre community including schools and colleges and West End shows including Frozen, The Lion King, Back To the Future, & Juliet and Moulin Rouge.
