Olivier Award-winning actress Sharon D Clarke will host this year’s UK Theatre Awards at London’s historic Guildhall next month.
The star, whose recent hits include the title role in the Chichester Festival Theatre’s critically-acclaimed production of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, Or Change, will host the glittering ceremony on Sunday 15 October.
Commenting on her involvement in the show, the actress who was awarded an MBE in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours in January, said: “From musicals and plays to opera and dance, the last year has seen incredible work performed on stages up and down the country. The UK is home to the greatest talents, both on and off stage, and I can’t wait to celebrate the industry’s phenomenal achievements in October.”
The only nationwide awards to recognise and celebrate outstanding achievements in regional theatre both on stage and off throughout the home nations, the nominations for this the UK Theatre Awards 2017 will be announced on Thursday (14 September).
Last year’s award-winning actresses Clare Burt (Flowers For Mrs Harris) and Rebecca Trehearn (Show Boat) will reveal the list of nominees at 1:30pm on @TwitterStage.
More than 30,000 public votes have already been cast this year for the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award with Smooth Radio – the award which gives the public the chance to celebrate their local theatre and the vital work they do in their communities. Last year’s star-studded ceremony, compered by award-winning actor Lesley Manville, featured a performance from award-winner Burt and appearances from guest presenters including Eileen Atkins, Owen Teale, Laura Pitt-Pulford, Stephanie Beacham, Don Warrington and Preeya Kalidas.
The UK Theatre Awards are supported by a number of major organisations involved in theatre across the UK including Harbottle & Lewis, Theatre Tokens, White Light, Q-Park and Smooth Radio.
