Sheffield Theatres’ hit home-grown new musical Standing At The Sky’s Edge will transfer to London’s Olivier in January 2021 following a return to the Sheffield Crucible this autumn.
A National Theatre co-production with Sheffield Theatres in association with Various Productions, the show which received its world premiere in Sheffield last March is directed by Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director Robert Hastie
Combining new and classic songs by award-winning singer/songwriter Richard Hawley and inspired by the people of his home city of Sheffield, the show which features a book by playwright Chris Bush follows the fortunes of three families through 60 turbulent years in the high-rise Park Hill area of the city.
The original production was designed by Ben Stones, with choreography by Lynne Page, musical supervision by Tom Deering, musical direction by Will Stuart, lighting design by Mark Henderson and sound design by Simon Baker.
Standing At The Sky’s Edge is one of nine productions announced to play on the South Bank in 2020/2021 alongside previously announced shows, national touring productions and a West End transfer. International touring productions, include a US tour of Anaïs Mitchell’s record-breaking Hadestown, first seen at the NT in late 2018 ahead of a Broadway run in 2019 where the production won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The NT has also announced it will increase the quantity of low-price tickets for the South Bank shows by 25%, with 250,000 available across the year priced at £20 or less.
