Phil Daniels and Janie Dee will feature in the cast for three showcase performances of a new musical based on Oscar Wilde’s haunting story of The Happy Prince.
Daniels, whose stage credits include Les Misérables in the West End and This House at the National Theatre and Garrick Theatre, will play The Mayor with award-winning West End favourite Dee (Carousel, Follies, National Theatre) taking on the role of Mrs Bentley.
New Adventures’ principal dancer Sam Archer (Edward Scissorhands) will star as The Prince alongside another member of the New Adventures company, Sophia Hurdley as The Swallow.
The cast will also include: David Burt, Louis Gaunt, Sammy Graham, Jessica Pardoe, Edwin Ray, Ronald Samm, Cilla Silvia, Gemma Wardle and Alfie Wickham.
With music, lyrics and direction by Hal Cazalet and a book by Michael Barry, the musical will debut at The Place in London on 3 and 4 May 2019. Barry will also serve as movement director for the performances while Hurdley and Archer will provide the choreography and lighting will be by David Howe.
Announcing the musical, Cazalet said: “The Happy Prince is a fairy tale for today and as Oscar Wilde intended, for both adults and children alike. I can’t help but feel that the Wildean themes of greed and corruption set against the redeeming power of love and sacrifice are every bit as relevant and urgent in our present world, as when Wilde wrote the story in 1888.”
