As crowd and critic-pleasing British musical Six begins its eagerly-anticipated Broadway debut, the show creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss are celebrating again with the news that the show’s songs have been streamed 100 million times on Spotify and Apple Music.
With 450,000 streams per day across the Spotify and Apple Music platforms, the Six studio album is the second highest streamed theatre cast album in the world (Hamilton holds the top spot).
Commenting on the latest development in the Six success story, Marlow and Moss said: “Our minds are completely blown at this incredible news! We are overjoyed that these nine songs – our little babies – have become so popular. With six productions of Six playing simultaneously around the world, and Anne Boleyn’s song ‘Don’t Lose Ur Head’ shared over half a billion times on Tik Tok – well, we’re just feeling kinda overwhelmed and incredibly grateful!
“We wrote these songs in our final year at college for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe, and our only thought at that time was to not embarrass ourselves or our friends. To be nominated for five Olivier Awards, be named “the musical of the decade” by WhatsOnStage and with us now being second only on Spotify and Apple Music streaming to Hamilton is beyond our wildest dreams. The streaming news comes just over a week after Moss entered the record books as the youngest female director of a Broadway musical. Moss, who co-directs Six with Jamie Armitage, joins Orson Welles, who was 22 when he entered the record books as the youngest man to direct a musical on Broadway with The Cradle Will Rock in 1937. Welles jointly holds the male record with Joseph C. Pevney who joined him in 1942 with Let Freedom Sing.
Six recently marked its first West End birthday at the Arts Theatre by announcing its third extended booking period, taking the award-winning production’s current London run up to January 2021.
Over 90,000 extra tickets were made available for the show which recently welcomed a new member of the regal line-up, Sophie Isaacs. The Heathers’ star who played Goldilocks in the festive Palladium panto Goldilocks and the Three Bears stepped into the role of Katherine Howard following the departure of Vicki Manser who has joined the tour of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.
Written by university friends Marlow and Moss, Six was nominated in 2017 for Musical Theatre Review’s inaugural Best Musical Award. The show puts the spotlight on Henry VIII’s wives as they form a 21st century girl band. The show’s first Arts Theatre run followed a successful return visit to the Edinburgh Fringe and a well-received four-date London run in January 2018.
The creative team also includes choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and musical supervisor Joe Beighton, with set design by Emma Bailey, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Tim Deiling, sound design by Paul Gatehouse and orchestrations by Tom Curran.
Six is the first musical from Marlow and Moss, two thirds of the award-winning theatre company Hot Gay Time Machine whose satirical show Hot Gay Time Machine was also a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe before playing a sold-out run at The Other Palace in 2018.
Six made its North American debut at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in May last year. Prior to Broadway, the show also played limited engagements in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Edmonton, Canada and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The show will return to Chicago this summer for an open-ended run starting on 8 July.
With the nine-month Royal tour currently playing to packed houses across the UK, the show has also just made its Australian debut at the Sydney Opera House. Discussions are also under way for the show to head for Japan and South Korea.
