Just days after opening night the producers of the UK premiere of hit Broadway musical Be More Chill announced a six-week extension to the show’s run at The Other Palace, making it the longest-running musical at the London venue.
Commenting on the announcement, writer Joe Iconis said: “Making my London debut as a musical theatre writer has long been a dream of mine and my experience with Be More Chill at The Other Palace has exceeded all expectations. I have been blown away by the response of audiences and the theatre community here in the UK and am ecstatic that we will be extending our run until 14 June.
“How thrilling that more people will now get to experience this production I am so proud of, populated by a genius cast of British unicorns. I look forward to returning this summer to see those brilliant creatures work their misfit magic once again.”
Originally due to play The Other Palace from 12 February until 3 May, Be More Chill is based on the novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. With original music and lyrics by Iconis and a book by Joe Tracz, the show was commissioned by and premiered at Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey in 2015.
The show captured the imagination of the online community when the 2015 original cast recording was released on Ghostlight Records and millions of people streamed the album. The show soon had a devoted and growing fan base which led to the show’s Off-Broadway debut in 2018 ahead of last year’s Broadway premiere run. When the ‘2019 Broadway Cast Recording’ was released, it debuted at number two on the Cast Albums Chart.
Be More Chill in London stars Scott Folan (Mother of Him, Dammed By Despair) and Blake Patrick Anderson (Closer to Heaven, Starlight Express) alongside two former Queens from hit British musical Six, Renee Lamb (Catherine of Aragon in the original Arts Theatre production) and Millie O’Connell (Anne Boleyn at the Arts Theatre). The cast also includes Miracle Chance, Stewart Clarke, Eloise Davies, James Hameed, Miles Paloma, Christopher Fry and Eve Norris.
Director Stephen Brackett heads a creative team that includes choreographer Chase Brock, set designer Beowulf Boritt, costume designer Bobby Frederick Tilley, lighting designer Tyler Micoleau, sound designer Ryan Rumery and projection designer Alex Basco Koch. Musical supervision and orchestrations are by Charlie Rosen, with music vocal arrangements by Emily Marshall and UK casting by Will Burton.
