Crowd and critic-pleasing new British musical Six will make its much-anticipated Broadway debut in early 2020.
Announced two years to the day the show was first performed as a student production at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, the Broadway transfer to the 1,000-seat Brooks Atkinson Theatre (home to hit show Waitress since 2016) will begin with preview performances from 13 February 2020. The official opening night will be on 12 March 2020.
Commenting on the latest development in the Six success story, writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss said: “We are UNBELIEVABLY excited about Six coming to Broadway, like actually what is going on! We are so grateful that we get to share our show with an even wider audience, especially somewhere as iconic as the home of musical theatre – BROADWAY BABY!! The producers added: “From its student beginnings at the Edinburgh Festival, via the West End we’re absolutely thrilled to bring Six to Broadway. Toby and Lucy have created an empowering musical about six of the most misrepresented women in history that couldn’t be more timely. We can’t wait for New York audiences to see the production at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.”
With the New York cast to be announced soon, the London run of the hit show was recently extended for the second time with the opening of a new booking period, taking the show’s Arts Theatre run up to Sunday 5 July 2020.
Coinciding with the release of 85,000 more tickets, the producers of the rock-flavoured show in which the wives of Henry VIII take centre stage also recently announced plans for three more Sing Along performances at the Arts Theatre.
Written by university friends Marlow and Moss, the musical which was nominated in 2017 for our inaugural Best Musical Award, puts the spotlight on the Tudor King’s wives as they form a 21st century girl band. The show’s first Arts Theatre run followed a successful return visit to the Edinburgh Fringe and a well-received four-date London run in January 2018.
Presented by Kenny Wax and Global Musicals, the show which features tracks including ‘Ex Wives’, ‘Haus of Holbein’ and ‘Don’t Lose Ur Head’, is directed by co-creator Moss and Jamie Armitage.
The creative team also includes choreographer Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and musical supervisor Joe Beighton, with set design by Emma Bailey, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Tim Deiling, sound design by Paul Gatehouse and orchestrations by Tom Curran.
Six is the first musical from Marlow and Moss, two thirds of the award-winning theatre company Hot Gay Time Machine whose satirical show Hot Gay Time Machine was also a hit at the Fringe before playing a sold-out run at The Other Palace in 2018.
Partnering with US producer Kevin McCollum, Six made its North American debut at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in May. The successful run ended on 4 August. Prior to Broadway, the show will also play limited engagements in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Edmonton, Canada and Saint Paul, Minnesota.
The show is also due to take to the road across the UK for a nine-month Royal tour this autumn, and discussions are also under way for the show to head for Japan, Australia and South Korea.
