Olivier Award-winning actor Giles Terera will mark the publication of his book Hamilton and Me: An Actor’s Journal by returning to Hamilton’s London home, the Victoria Palace Theatre, for an exclusive event.
Featuring guest appearances from original London cast members including Jamael Westman (Alexander Hamilton) and Rachel John (Angelica Schuyler), the special event which will be broadcast on 1 July at 8.30pm UK time will offer a taste of the book which charts Terera’s personal Hamilton journey.
Discussing the book which is being published by leading theatre publisher, Nick Hern Books, Terera said: “As an actor, I’ve always kept rehearsal journals. It helps me process what I’m experiencing as well as helping me remember what I’m supposed to be doing.
“When I was asked to play the part of Aaron Burr in Hamilton I knew that it would be both an incredible challenge and an extraordinary journey – one I wanted to learn from as well as enjoy. So, every day, I kept notes on the work and the experience.
“I’m so happy that an experience which has been so life-changing for me might now be of use to students, theatre-makers and anyone who loves Hamilton as much I do.”
Commenting on Terera’s work Lin-Manuel Miranda added: “This is one of the most joyous and clear-eyed approaches to playing a character that I have ever read. I am so grateful Giles took notes on his process and turned them into this book.
“I was already in awe of his performance; now I’m in awe of his humanity and attention to detail and willingness to share the hard work and magic that goes into it.”
Heavily tipped from its Broadway opening night as a leading awards winner, Hamilton banked the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album before adding a stunning 11 Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical to its trophy cabinet.
Miranda’s tale of one of America’s founding fathers debuted Off-Broadway in February 2015 where it secured the piece’s first gong, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
The show which has book, music and lyrics by Miranda, is directed by Thomas Kail, with choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, and is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton.
Miranda’s ground-breaking musical opened in London’s West End in December 2017. The production would go on to win a record-equalling seven Olivier Awards – including Best Actor in a Musical for Terera, for his portrayal of Aaron Burr.
