Previously unreleased recordings by stage and screen favourite John Barrowman will feature on the 20th anniversary double CD featuring the original London cast recording of the 1990s musical Maddie, due for release next month.
Continuing its commitment to the preservation of ‘lost’ British theatre scores of the past 50 years, Stage Door Records will release the two CD deluxe edition on 14 October.
Based on the Jack Finney novel Marion’s Wall (which also was the inspiration for the 1986 film Maxie starring Glenn Close and Mandy Patinkin), Maddie features music by Stephen Keeling, lyrics by Shaun McKenna and a book by McKenna and Steven Dexter.
Developed during the Stephen Sondheim Masterclass at Oxford University in 1990, the show’s producer Kenny Wax premiered Maddie at the Salisbury Playhouse in September 1996 ahead of a West End transfer to the Lyric Theatre a year later.
Featuring the original London cast recordings, the Maddie Deluxe Edition also includes a bonus disc with 25 previously unreleased studio demos of cut songs and alternate versions performed by Barrowman and other musical theatre performers: John Barr, Lorna Dallas, Hal Fowler, Teddy Kempner, Jonny Rees, Angela Richards and Jacqui Scott.
Three new recordings performed by Meredith Braun, Alister Cameron, Dominic Hodson and Moir Leslie are included alongside the original recordings of London cast members Lynda Baron, Graham Bickley, Kevin Colson and Summer Rognlie.
Commenting on the album’s release, the show’s producer Wax said: “I’m thrilled that this new CD of songs from Maddie has a chance to breathe a new lease of life into the old girl. Like its main protagonist Madeline Marsh, I’m sure that one day she will be re-born and come back to entertain a whole new generation.”
