Star judges and guest performances for Showstoppers’ Eurovision alternative

A host of stay-at-home stars and celebrities will join in the fun when The Showstoppers Alternative Eurovision Song Contest streams live on Facebook from 8pm (GMT) on 15 May 2020.

Christopher Biggins, Arlene Phillips, London Hughes and Claire Sweeney will take on judging details with comedian and presenter Tom Allen commentating on the action.

Presented by Showstoppers’ cast members Pippa Evans and Andrew Pugsley with Philip Pellew stepping up as ‘The Man With The Stats’, the evening will feature guest performances from: EGG – Costas and Maria for Greece with ‘3 Gloves (Sexy Baby)’; Jordan Gray – Yana Novakovakova for Czech Republic with ‘Sad Clown’; Josie Lawrence – Yosie Longrance for Denmark with ‘Bink Bonk Bink (Cheeky Monkey)’ and Mick McShane – Damathouse Mamanappi for Cyprus with ‘Wind In My Valley’.

Following on from the successful 24-hour lockdown song challenges, improvisation specialists The Showstoppers hope their Alternative Eurovision Song Contest will fill the void left by the cancellation of both the Eurovision Song Contest and its popular home-grown companion piece West End Eurovision, with an evening featuring performances of new songs parodying everyone’s favourite Eurovision styles.

Following on from the recent 24-hour lockdown song challenges, The Showstoppers due to offer their own slice of typically over the top Eurovision entertainment are:

Jonathan Ainscough – Fergal Brogue for Ireland, ‘If You’re With Me’
Ruth Bratt – OM for Finland, ‘Domino’
Justin Brett – Hej! for Sweden, ‘Hej! Fever’
Julie Clare – Marla for Italy, ‘Only You’
Dylan Emery – Hakan for Turkey, ‘Into Your Light’
Susan Harrison – Marika Elán for Slovakia, ‘Identity’

Musical arrangements, production and keys will be by Duncan Walsh Atkins, Christopher Ash and Jordan Clarke, with percussion by Alex Atty and Craig Apps and Dylan Emery and Justin Brett on guitars.

Originated by Adam Meggido and Dylan Emery, the Showstopper formula involves taking individual suggestions from each night’s audience and turning them into a brand new fully choreographed and scored musical. Featuring a rotating company, the improvised musical theatre show was founded in London in 2008 and has proved to be a hit with audiences around the world. An Edinburgh Fringe favourite for 12 years, The Showstoppers have featured in their own BBC Radio 4 series and played to packed houses in the West End.
