Part Two of Jon M Chu’s thrillifying film adaptation of the much-loved hit musical Wicked – Wicked: For Good – will be released on digital platforms in the UK on 2 January 2026.
The much-anticipated second instalment stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. When the movie was released in November, it set a new record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a film based on a Broadway show.
Now it’s only a few days before fans can purchase Wicked: For Good on digital platforms, including Amazon (it’s released on 30 December in the US).
The epic conclusion to the untold story of the witches of Oz begins with Elphaba being demonised as The Wicked Witch of the West, living in exile and fighting for truth. Glinda the Good reigns in Emerald City but when the angry citizens of Oz rise up against the Wicked Witch, the two must reunite and truly see each other to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good.
Stephen Schwartz and Winne Holzman’s Tony Award-winning show is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which is in itself a re-imagining of L Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation. Holzman collaborated with writer Dana Fox on the script for Wicked: For Good, while composer Schwartz penned two new songs for the movie: ‘No Place Like Home’ (for Elphaba) and ‘The Girl in the Bubble’ (for Glinda).
The new music featured in the Wicked part two film score was just one of the topics discussed by Musical Theatre Review editor Lisa Martland when she joined Andrew Tomlins on his West End Frame Show podcast back in November. In fact, the duo had so much to say about the movie, that they recorded three episodes!
In the first spoiler-free episode, Lisa and Andrew gave their first reactions, how they felt when watching the film, how the stage story translated to the screen and the themes and messages that resonated with them.
In the second, they dove even deeper, unpacking the brand-new songs and describing the impact of the opening sequence. They discussed Ariana Grande’s performance of ‘Thank Goodness/I Couldn’t Be Happier’, the reworked version of ‘Wonderful’ and the expanded storyline for Nessarose and Boq, including how ‘Wicked Witch of the East’ has been changed for the movie.
The conversation continued with a closer look at Glinda’s expanded character arc, as well as the intentions of Madame Morrible and The Wizard and how their dynamic with both Elphaba and Glinda played out differently in the film.
Finally, the third episode saw Andrew and Lisa praising Cynthia Erivo’s sensational performance of ‘No Good Deed’. They also talked about the ‘fight’ scene, the reveal of the mysterious figure on the horse and the added context surrounding Elphaba’s relationship with Chistery and the flying monkeys.
The conversation continued with the focus moving to Erivo and Grande’s emotional rendition of ‘For Good’ and the power behind the characters’ highly emotional final moment together. They also explored the meaning and emotional impact of the movie’s closing shot.
Finally, they reflected on their overall thoughts and why they thought Wicked: For Good would be part of movie musical history forever.
