Superman flies in to the Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre

Craig Berry

Craig Berry plays the title role in It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre, London

All Star Productions’ staging of It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman (4–22 March, press night is 7 March) at North East London’s Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre is the first UK production of this musical comedy.

With a score by Charles Strouse (Annie) and Lee Adams (Bye Bye Birdie), and a book by David Newman and Robert Benton, this is the tale of Superman’s efforts to defeat the vengeful Dr Abner Sedgwick, a ten-time Nobel Prize-losing scientist, who seeks to destroy the world’s symbol of good. Superman also comes into romantic conflict with Max Mencken, a columnist for the Daily Planet newspaper who is intent on revealing Superman’s true identity, as he resents Lois Lane’s attraction to Superman.

Craig Berry as Superman and Michelle LaFortune as Lois are joined by Paul Harwood (Max), Sarah Kennedy (Sydney), Matthew Ibbotson (Sedgewick), Charlie Vose (Jim), Andrew Truluck (Perry), Joseph Murray (Father Ling), Thomas Widdop (Fan Po Ling), Susanna Porter (Tai Ling), Alexander Barties (Don Ling) and Jade Nelson (Ming Foo Ling), plus Charlotte Debattista and Danielle Black.

Reuniting the team behind 2012’s award-winning Flora the Red Menace, All Star Productions has fast established a reputation for presenting revivals of rare, often neglected works and UK premieres. On this occasion Randy Smartnick directs, alongside musical director Aaron Clingham, choreographer Kate McPhee and lighting designer Sky Bemebury.

It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman is presented by Andrew Yon for All Star Productions Ltd.
