The tenth anniversary tour of Judy & Liza is set to be one of first shows to visit UK regional theatres as the country emerges from lockdown.
Written by and starring Emma Dears (Les Misérables, UK tour and West End, Miss Saigon, West End) opposite stage and screen actress Helen Sheals (Judy! Arts Theatre, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Hull Truck and UK tour), the musical which charts the relationship between Liza Minnelli and her iconic mother Judy Garland will play a series of dates across the UK in May and June.
Produced by Bill Elms Productions and On Song Productions, the tour is due to begin at the Swan Theatre in Worcester on 19 May 2021, just two days after the planned earliest date for the resumption of socially distanced indoor performances.
With Francis Goodhand as musical director, the show explores the turbulent relationship between the two women set against the backdrop of the 1964 London Palladium concert which marked their first joint stage concert appearance. The musical features performances of the songs most closely associated with the two superstars including ‘Cabaret’, ‘Maybe This Time’, ‘Over The Rainbow’, ‘The Man That Got Away’ and ‘The Trolley Song’
Announcing the tour producer Bill Elms said: “We are thrilled to finally announce the 10th Anniversary UK tour of Judy & Liza, it’s a production very close to my heart as I worked on the very first show.
“It is going to be a very special tour, as for many of the theatres, this will be their first show of the year, as we come out of lockdown. We can promise audiences a safe and very memorable experience as they rediscover the joy of live entertainment through this captivating show.”
The show’s creator and star Dears added: “It is with pure excitement that we can take Judy and Liza’s emotional and iconic story on the road. As performers, we crave being in front of a live audience – seeing, hearing and feeling their reactions, it gets no better than that.
“Whether you’re a fan of Judy or Liza, or both, their story is unique. The show is full of love, heartache, and passion, and Helen and I have worked tirelessly to make sure we get every tiny detail just right. Join us for an evening with the mother and daughter who really did put the ‘show’ into showbiz.”
The tour is due to follow up the opening performance in Worcester with dates at the City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds (20 May), Chesterfield’s Pomegranate Theatre (22 May), the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham St Annes (29 May), New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion (4 June), Coventry’s Albany Theatre (12 June), Theatr Clwyd, Mold (13 June) and Lichfield’s Garrick Theatre (26 June). A London date will be added soon and the show will also tour in October.
